National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ) is gradually migrating to NDHQ (Carling). Long-term plans for NDHQ (Carling) will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art Sacred Space in building 5 to provide for the spiritual, religious, social and community needs of the Defence Team of NDHQ for years to come. This Sacred Space will be in a highly visible and desirable location, near the Defence Team Senior Commanders’ suites and will provide a very accessible religious, spiritual and social resource site for military and civilian workers to enjoy. The Sacred Space will be multipurpose, multi-faith in nature, and will be provided with an appropriate ablutions and storage space for washing before prayer, the safe storage of consumable sacred items, books, religious symbols, as well as the storage of shoes and coats, etc. The Sacred Space will be generic in interior design so that all faith groups will find it amenable for their religious, spiritual and social uses and all ornamentation will possess depictions from nature and the out-doors in a four seasons motif (as well as the use of muted greens and browns in the carpets, wooden rafters, etc.). Furniture is being purchased by the CFSU(O) Chaplain Team for use within the Sacred Space and will be moveable, as well as the reusing of sacred items from the chapel at NDMC (which is to be decommissioned).
In the interim period, in the interest of facilitating spiritual resiliency, as part of the Defence Team’s efforts to promote total health and wellness, NDHQ (Carling) has established an interim Sacred Space for use by Defence Team personnel, (military and civilian) and by religious and spiritual groups wishing to meet for prayer, worship, meditation or study. It is located in a conference room off the main hallway at 8S.1.V10.02
